There are 4 factors that determine the success of a cleaning process: chemistry, mechanical power, time and temperature. They are often represented as the ‘Sinner Circle’. If you change one element, you also influence the others. For example: if you use hot water, you will need less time to clean.
With chemistry we refer to the detergents that are used, which help remove water-insoluble dirt, such as grease and oil. Detergents contain surfactants, which enlarge the surface between the product and the cleaning area (it is spread out more). This way, the cleaning solution can penetrate more easily into cracks and pores.
With a longer contact time, hard to remove dirt gets softer and the detergent can penetrate more deeply. This way, dirt loosens easier.
Higher temperatures can favour the action of a detergent and aid in loosening dirt. Especially when trying to wash away grease or oils it’s more effective to use warm water instead of cold water.
The force that is required to loosen dirt is what we call mechanical action. It is determined by the contact pressure, how fast you move and the abrasiveness of your cleaning tool. For example, a steel sponge is very abrasive, while a soft cloth requires more pressure and faster movement.
The second step in a hygienic process is disinfection. Disinfection describes a process that kills many or all pathogenic microorganisms on inanimate objects. It requires a product with a biocidal activity, which is strictly regulated. Just like the previous step, there are multiple factors that influence the disinfection process.
