Since greenhouse horticulture companies have a large annual need for irrigation water, they have to look at other options besides rainwater and groundwater to meet this need. There are various types of alternative water types from within or outside the greenhouse company that can contribute to this annual need.

This is why Roam Technology is involved in the Belgian OptiWAIE project. The project is a Dutch acronym for “Optimisation of water use in greenhouse horticulture using alternative internal and external water sources“. This project focuses on the following crops: cucumber, lettuce and tomato. It’s an initiative by Inagro, a Belgian research & consultancy company in agriculture and horticulture, together with Proefcentrum Hoogstraten and PSKW, two practice-oriented research centres in horticulture. Together with their project partners, they guide growers in choosing the right alternative water source.

This project will address the following topics:

  • characterisation and quantification of alternative internal and external water sources.
  • checking the microbiological and chemical composition of the water.
  • investigating and evaluating the most suitable water purification technology.
  • examining the implications of using these alternative water sources for cultivation.
  • testing technologies that promote circular use.

The main goal of this research is to explore the potential of using alternative water sources in greenhouses, without compromising water quality. These sources include condensation water, process water, and surface water. With the varying water quality of these sources often failing to meet strict greenhouse standards, Huwa-San TR-50 is the ultimate solution to revolutionise the industry and set a new standard.

Huwa-San TR-50 is a unique biodegradable disinfectant suitable for combatting bacteria, fungi, viruses and biofilm. Thanks to its properties it is the ideal candidate for making contaminated, low-quality water reusable. In sum, dosing Huwa-San supports water recirculation, leading to reduced water consumption. We value being involved in this project. Throughout the process, we will certainly share interesting findings.
