Legionella control

The bacterium ‘Legionella pneumophila’ and other related bacteria are common in natural water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs, but usually present in low numbers. However, they may also be found in man-made, purpose-built water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers, hot and cold water systems and spa pools.

It is Legionella pneumophila bacteria that may result in the contraction of the very dangerous ‘Legionnaires’ disease. The most common form of transmission of Legionella is via inhalation of aerosols of contaminated water. These aerosols can be produced during showering, via cooling towers or via other devices that produce sprays, jets, and mists. The severity of the Legionellosis infection, ranges from mild illness to serious pneumonia that in 5 to 10% of the patients even results in death.

The bacteria live and grow in water systems with a temperature range between 20 to 50 °C and they thrive especially well in water systems with biofilms. The prevention of Legionella growth include good maintenance of the water systems and all related devices by regular cleaning and disinfection.

In Europe, Australia and the USA there are about 10–20 cases of Legionellosis detected per million population per year.

How we can help?

Roam Technology has many years of experience in the control of legionella. In fact, the primary reason for the development of Huwa-San technology in the early 1980’s, was based on finding an effective alternative to chlorine disinfection for the control of Legionella bacteria and biofilms. Huwa-San has been that trusted product for the global water treatment industry ever since and is still the market leading stabilised hydrogen peroxide to this day.

The unique stability of Huwa-San ensures that the disinfection of your water system is prolonged and totally thorough. Independent reports have shown a > 5-Log reduction (similar to an effectivity of >99.999%) of Legionella pneumophila within just 60 minutes contact time to EN13623:2021 standards.

Used as both a shock disinfection or low level constant dose ongoing protection. Schools, offices, hotels and airports across the globe all trust in the performance of Huwa-San. Its low dose rates and environmentally responsible footprint ensures its cost effective whilst leaving only water and oxygen as residuals.

Having used Huwa-San for many years I’ve found it to be an excellent product which performs exactly as promised. I recommend Huwa-san to my clients and colleagues as I know it won’t let them down. It’s our product of choice for water treatment & legionella control.

Pure drinking water

Drinking water must be pure. Delivering safe drinkable water is quoted as being the most important issue we will face for the next generation.

The treatment of our drinking water generally consists of several phases depending on the source water. After removing particles and excess chemical substances through oxidation, flocculation and filtration the water needs to be disinfected.

Disinfection is necessary to prevent the spread of diseases through contaminated water (e.g. E.coli, Campylobacter, Norovirus and Cholera). Traditionally chlorine has been used. However, due to the risks associated with the formation of harmful disinfection by-products such as Trihalomethanes (THM’s), a known carcinogen, more sustainable and safer alternatives are desperately needed.

How can we help?

Roam Technology’s expertise in treatment of drinking water is second to none. We provide solutions that are chlorine-free and are beneficial for the water palatability. Our solutions are biodegradable, leaving no colour, no odour and no taste to the drinking water.

Biofilm control

A biofilm is an organized structure of microorganisms, adhered to surface in an encasement of a self-produced extracellular matrix. These sessile communities can be formed on all kind of surfaces, such as  within pipes, cooling towers, heat exchangers, hospital equipment, plumbing systems, etc.

A biofilm is a thus a complex miniature ecosystem in which bacteria and other pathogens can thrive. Biofilm formation is a continuous process and can be divided in 4 main steps:

  1. the adhesion of cells to the substrate
  2. the initiation to form small colonies
  3. the maturation with the production of extracellular matrix
  4. the dispersal of cells

Biofilms appear to be the most common lifestyle of various pathogens and their formation has been acknowledged as a key factor in their virulence.

What makes a biofilm so hard to control?

  • In the biofilm, bacteria are protected from disinfectants by the extracellular matrix. Disinfectants often react away with this protection layer, without even reaching the microorganisms.
  • On top of that, some bacteria can excrete an enzyme called catalase. Catalase can in fact break down unstabilised hydrogen peroxide.
  • Finally, because the microorganisms flourish in this miniature environment, they can better cope with changes in the environment (such as temperature fluctuations) and are able to use nutrients more efficiently.

How can we help?

Our Huwa-San technology offers a range of disinfectants which offer a perfect balance with reactivity and stability. Different independent studies, executed by renowned laboratories, have proven that:

  • Huwa-san remains to have a very close interaction with the cell surface, even when the microorganism is present in the biofilm. This makes it possible to reach the biofilm interior and still oxidize the microorganism.
  • Less catalase activity is induced when using Huwa-San
  • Huwa-San is effective against the formation of biofilms, as well as the eradication of preformed biofilms

If you are challenged by the presence of biofilm, don’t hesitate to contact us. With an endoscope, we can check if biofilm is present in your system. Next, we start with assessing the process in detail and detect the most critical points in effective biofilm prevention. This way, we are able to give tailor-made advice and a solution that fits your specific needs!
